Gold River, Vancouver Island
The moderately sized Gold River flows south from Gold Lake in Strathcona Provincial Park through the town of Gold River on Vancouver Island. The Gold River continues its journey to the Muchalat Inlet on the west coast through one of the more beautiful areas of Vancouver Island.

Access to the lowermost 11.5km of the river is via Highway 28 beyond Gold River. Upriver portions are reached on the road from Gold River to Woss (next 10.5km) and on secondary logging roads following the remaining 18km of fishable length of the river.

A car is adequate for the trip, but a truck is recommended for the latter section.

There are trails to various fishing areas, and some sections can be drifted, although it is risky without the services of a guide, due to the huge boulders in the river, fast currents, and the deep water. Chinook and coho salmon are caught in the fall, and cutthroat trout in the lower reaches of the river.

The Gold River supports both summer and winter runs of steelhead. This is a great wild steelhead river. All fish are wild, as there is no hatchery stocking program for the Gold River system.

Nearest Town: Gold River, Gold River Highway 28

Nearest Lake: Muchalat Lake

Nearest Parks: White Ridge Provincial Park, Strathcona Provincial Park

Additional Info: Streamside camping is available, aside from the Buttle Lake Campground on Buttle Lake in Strathcona Provincial Park.
